With the huge success of Jurassic World, this is the first time that a Pixar film has not opened to #1 domestically. But that doesn’t mean it didn’t make money, it made the best opening weekend domestic money for an original film beating Avatar (Avatar opened to $77M).
This was a massive weekend for domestic numbers. Jurassic World only dropped 51% and made $102M, that’s an impressive hold for a blockbuster like Jurassic World. Jurassic World will cross the $400M mark domestically today, and could make a $1B today, the fastest movie to hit a billion dollars, the question now is, how much will it make? Will it be the first film to challenge James Cameron?
The cash is just pouring for Jurassic World. Not only is it raining money for them domestically for overseas too, as last week it had the biggest global opening ever. Overseas the film has made $583M bringing it to a worldwide total of $981M.
Inside Out cooked up $91M domestically this week. Mentioned before, this is the best for an original film, and the second bet for Pixar just behind Toy Story 3 which made $110M opening weekend. Inside Out picked up $41M overseas brining the movie up to $132M worldwide.
Paul Feig’s comedy Spy also cooked up $10.5M bringing it to a domestic total of $75M and a worldwide grab of $170M so far. San Andreas came in fourth place this week and crossed $400M worldwide this week.
