Box Office Wrap-Up July 25

Welcome to Box Office Wrap-Up. Box Office Wrap-Up will be a weekly show, were we discuss the weekend’s box office results, and predict the upcoming weekend.

Alright, so last week the king of the Box Office was of course Marvel’s “Ant-Man” grossing $57.2Millon Opening Weekend. While it did open at #1, Ant-Man was Marvel’s lowest debut since 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk”. So, was Ant-Man a flop? That’s up to discussion, I don’t think it was a flop, Ant-Man is a C-List Superhero, Green Lantern – for example, is an A-List Superhero, and that only grossed $53.1Milllion opening weekend. Comment below, if you think it was a flop!

The #2 spot went to “Minions”, with an impressive opening weekend of $115.7Million, these little guys dropped dropped 57%, more than any “Despicable Me” movie, the movie grossed $49.2Million, in it’s second weekend.

Coming in at #3 was “Trainwreck”, Trainwreck stars Amy Schumer, and Bill Hader, and is directed by Judd Apatow, the movie surpassed expectations, and grossed $30Million Opening Weekend, which is more than fellow R-Rated Comedy, Spy.

At #4 was Inside Out, the movie grossed $90.4Million Opening Weekend, a couple weeks back, where it grossed more than any original film ever opening weekend. This weekend it grossed $11.5Million, dropping only 35% from its last weekend.

Rounding out the top 5, was Jurassic World. In other news, Jurassic World just surpassed Marvel’s “The Avengers” to become the 3rd highest-grossing film of all time, the film grossed $208.8Million Opening Weekend, more than any film ever. This Weekend, the film trialed just behind Inside Out, grossing $11.4Million, and dropping 37% from its last weekend.

Here’s the Top 10:

  1. Ant-Man $57.2M
  2. Minions $49.2M
  3. Trainwreck $30M
  4. Inside Out $11.5M
  5. Jurassic World $11.4M
  6. Terminator: Genisys $5.4M
  7. Magic Mike XXL $4.4M
  8. The Gallows $4M
  9. Bajrangi Bhaijaan $2.62M
  10. Ted 2 $2.6M

Now, let’s get into predictions! Opening this weekend, are 3 films. “Pixels”, “Paper Towns”, and “Southpaw”.

1. Ant-Man

“Ant-Man at #1?!?” “Don’t you think Pixels will beat out Ant-Man?!?” Here’s the thing, Ant-Man, got an “A” Cinema-Score, audiences seem to love it, so let’s say it drops 40%, it still makes about $34Million, Pixels is set to open in the, mid-to-high, $20’s, so I think Ant-Man will come on top at #1. 2. Pixels

I know what you’re thinking, “Another Kevin James, and Adam Sandler comedy?!? Boo!!” Well, yes but remember that “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2” opened to $23.7Million, and “Grown Ups 2” opened to $41.5Million. A lot of people like these movies, + it has one of the greatest premises of all time, that’s why I think Pixels is going to come at #2. (Read our review here)

3. Minions

People love the Minions, kids will go see this thing over, and over, and over again.  Also, these Minions are EVERYWHERE, and I mean everywhere. Car keys, necklaces, backpacks, decorations, toys. Regardless of what you think of it, this movie is making a lot of money.

4. Paper Towns

At 4th place, I think is going to be Paper Towns. Paper Towns is adapted off of John Green’s novel of the same name. So, why do I think Paper Towns will come in at 4th place? The Fault in our Stars. The Fault in our Stars grossed $48Million Opening Weekend, John Green has a HUGE fanbase, and also wrote The Fault in our Stars. (Read our review here)

5. Southpaw

The #5 spot, I think will go to Southpaw, just edging out Trainwreck. Jake Gylenhaal does have a big fanbase, and this is being marketed as a big blockbuster film, and twitter activity is very good. (Read our review here)
